Borzoi History
They say that the first borzois were brought to Russia by Kublai Khan in 9th century.
On picture: Kublai Khan with dog that could be one of first borzois.

The French Chronicle of the XIth century shows that three Borzois accompanied the daughter of the Grand Duke of Kiev, Anna Yaroslavna when she arrived in France to become the wife of Henri I.

1613 Imperial Kennels of the Czars in Gatchina was founded.
In 1887 the most famous borzoi breeder Nikolai Nikolaievich started breeding Borzois at Perchino, his private kennel near st. Petersburg.

Borzoi dog was used in hunting hare, wolfs and other wild animals. When a wolf was spotted, a trio of dogs, normally a dog and two bitches, were slipped to pursue the wolf and capture, pin it and hold the creature until the hunter arrived to finish the kill. The bitches were biting the victim's legs to disable the animal and the male attacked his neck. Today is hunting with borzoi forbidden in most countries, although it is still common in Russia.

In the time of the Tsars borzoi could not be purchased but only given as gift from the Tsar. The peasants in Russia were forbidden to own borzoi.
Most Borzoi were slaughtered after the 1917 revolution as a symbol of russian court and aristocracy.

The gunless hunting with hounds, particularly for hares or foxes, became widespread in the Russian Empire in the 18th-19th centuries, after the reign of Empress Anna who liked gun deerstalking. Emperor Peter II and Empress Elizabeth were among the most prominent lovers of hunting with hounds.
